Venezuela is not only the largest oil producer in Latin America but also among the largest oil producers in the world, with the country producing as much as 135.2 million tons of oil each year. Venezuela is part of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and was among the organization’s founding members. Latin American oil production is dominated by Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela, countries that were responsible for about 75% of the region's total output in 2014. These countries are also giants on the international stage, ranking as the world's ninth, 10th and 12th biggest oil producers , respectively. The latest figure is 7.5 million barrels per day. Two countries currently dominate Central and South American oil production: Venezuela and Brazil. Traditionally, Venezuela had been South America’s biggest producer.
